Profile

Hometown:
Seattle, WA
About Me:
I live and work in Seattle and very much love being a Pacific Northwesterner. After college, I took IMHO the requisite trip abroad spending time in Europe and then New Zealand and Australia. Upon my return, broke and needing a job, I went to an open house for Driver/Guides with Gray Line. It sounded intriguing enough and I figured if I could drive my dad's old '68 Chevy Nomad, I could drive a 40ft. motorcoach. Well, this experience lead me to the cruise and tour world and I spent 11 years in the "seasonal" world on a FT basis with both Holland America and Princess Cruises.

Now, I am working for the mother of all websites to find a seasonal job, Cool Works, and I couldn't be happier. Helping folks to find that experience that sets the stage for their growth and happiness in life is a fantastic feeling.
Website:
http://www.CoolWorks.com
Last Seasonal Job:
Being a Driver/Guide for Gray Line of Seattle.
Favorite Seasonal Job:
That's a tough one. I once worked concessions for the Everett Giants, now called the Everett Aquasox and that was a ton of fun. The people I worked with were energetic, fun and we got to share in the ups and downs of a minor league baseball team. Real grass! However, through my job as a Driver/Guide I saw lots of things that I never would have had the opportunity to do so if not for that experience. For example, I once drove the generals of the navy to every port and base around the Puget Sound including Bangor Sub Base. I got to carry national sports teams to and from the airport, dodging plane wings. What a trip! Quite literally.....
Where have you lived and worked?

Everett, WA - YMCA, Panagopolous Pizza, Catholic Community Services, Everett Giants

Pullman, WA - Regents Dining Hall, SALC (tutored students)

Seattle, WA - Gray Line of Seattle, Gray Line of Alaska and Princess Tours

Jokingly, Anchorage, AK for Gray Line of Alaska where I drove one airport transfer and a cruiseship transfer from ANC to Seward. : )
Dream Job:
Make enough money from taking photographs to support my habit.

Thoughts on the Summer and the Impending Fall

As Labor Day weekend approaches, I get that sinking feeling that summer is over and winter is just around the corner. I know that really we've still got a few more weeks of summer before the equinox, and there is always the possibility of an Indian summer, but I can feel it in the air. Change is a-comin'. Last year, it seems that we were everywhere, lots of travel, maybe too much, but we had a lot of fun. Perhaps that's why this year we're taking it easy and staying closer to home. It could als… Continue

Mark Twain - the quotable traveler

Today, as I reviewed my inbox in Google Reader, I came across the latest Blogging the Dream post by Daven Hafey called "Open if you want it to be." It's a great piece by the way, read it here. Near the end of the piece he uses a favorite quote of mine by Mark Twain. Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you did not do than by the ones you did do. Throw off the bowlines. Sail away fro… Continue

Outstanding in the Field

Last night we had the great fortune of attending one of the most interesting and scenic meals out in Carnation, WA. The dinner was put on by a group called Outstanding in the Field, founded by Jim Denevan. Outstanding in the Field, to quote their website, "is a roving culinary adventure - literally a restaurant without walls." The food is locally grown and is eaten at a very large table in a field. It was AWESOME!… Continue

Hi Kari,

I was looking something else up at wikipedia, and looked at their requirements, and yeah, you probably are too close. I might give it a try before the year is over if no one else does.

I'll first start by playing with their style, editing some existing entries before attempting it. I think it will be fun, anyways...my ex journalism/history/literature continually changing college days poking their head through.

I won't really begin until October. I'm done here in less than 2 weeks now, and don't really want to start on anything other than planning my between stops. Then the first three weeks at the ranch will be work...work...work. Did you ever see what can happen in the desert after four months?

But when I stop by and ask things like dates of the HR newsletter and network...you'll know I've started.

Hi Kari,

I need some help navigating the employment part of the website. I can't seem to find the jobs that are still available. I have looked on the "Help Wanted Now" section, and some of those jobs have expired. I have contacted some and they have all of their staff already. Is there a place where I can find the winter seasonal jobs which are still open?

Thank you! Linda

I lived up there for several years. If you want a good paying, fun job try Premier Alaska Tours. As a driver you make a bundle but you do have to throw luggage. Otherwise, any of the major tour companies have plenty of openings as customer service, food service, other. Look into which one gives you a discounted or even free cruise after only one season. In town is ok but the touring industry is the best. Princess, Holland America, Celebrity and so on. Premier doesn't have any cruise ships but the pay and the company I feel is the best. Went to work for Princess and Holland prior to Premier. If you don't have any driving experience, Princess would be good. Alaska is great---four months of the year. Good luck. Carol
